Karmel Christian Elementary School 01 was founded in 1976 in Ngaduman Hamlet, Tajuk Village, Getasan Subdistrict—a remote area on the slopes of Mount Merbabu at an altitude of 1,700 meters above sea level. The school was established in response to the challenges of low literacy rates (90% of the population is illiterate), lack of access to clean water and sanitation, and poor health and economic conditions of families due to geographical isolation and the absence of formal education facilities. Out of concern for the basic needs of the community, Karmel 01 Christian Elementary School was established to empower residents through education, while also serving as a bridge of love in proclaiming the Word of God.

The objectives of its establishment are:

  1. To spread the gospel and introduce Jesus Christ as the Savior.
  2. To eradicate illiteracy so that citizens can read and write.
  3. To provide formal education so that school-age children receive proper learning.
  4. To improve the health of the community through education programs and follow-up in the community.

Currently, Karmel 01 Christian Elementary School serves students from the hamlets of Ngaduman, Gedong, and Nglelo. Although located in a low- to middle-income area—where most parents are small farmers or laborers—the school continues to prioritize inclusivity by accepting both Christian and Muslim children. The curriculum emphasizes character-based education rooted in the Word of God and love for the environment; flagship programs include academic learning, jaranan (horse dance) extracurricular activities, and strengthening a love for the natural environment through simple practices at school.

Partners and Support SD Kristen Karmel 01 relies on the collaboration of various parties:

  • Yayasan Sion Salatiga.
  • GKJTU Manunggal Ngaduman.
  • Semarang Regency Government.
  • The surrounding community and village government.

Due to the limited number of students, Karmel 01 Christian Elementary School faces funding challenges for its ideal programs and teacher salaries. We are opening opportunities for partners and benefactors to support this ministry—whether through material donations, student scholarships, or infrastructure assistance. Together, we can advance education in remote areas and secure the future of the next generation.
