Yayasan Sion's Women’s Empowerment Program began in 2005 as a response to historical injustices that relegated women to a second-class status in the social order—particularly within the pre-independence Javanese cultural context—where access to education was severely limited. These conditions led to low levels of knowledge, minimal self-confidence, and a reluctance to speak up or take on decision-making roles, both in the domestic and public spheres. Through the “Group Living” method, the program was initially established with nine groups involving approximately 450 women. Over time, this initiative has grown rapidly and now reaches more communities.
The primary objectives of this program are to enhance women’s participation within families and society, strengthen group management, support business development to become more professional, and provide access to business capital loans. Strategies to achieve these goals include training in leadership and group management, financial reporting, home-based industry training, product marketing, and training on health and social issues. Additionally, the program conducts intensive monitoring and evaluation to ensure that each group grows sustainably.
The program’s service area covers four subdistricts—Getasan, Tengaran, Bringin, and Argomulyo—where the majority of the population works as farmers, merchants, and laborers. Through on-site support, the Sion Foundation team conducts training sessions designed to develop the technical and managerial skills of women’s group members, while also promoting economic independence and improving family well-being.
The program’s success is inseparable from close collaboration with various partners, including the Sion Foundation’s Health Unit; the UKSW Faculty of Food Technology, which contributes to food product packaging, marketing, and diversification; local government; and local leaders. We invite you to join us and be part of this change, because “Empowered Women, Pillars of the Family.”
