The Adoption Unit is one of the Sion Foundation’s major programs, which has been running since March 1991. This program was established through a partnership between the Sion Foundation and Salatiga Zending (Netherlands), upon the recommendation of the GKJTU Synod. Initially, the program served only 10 children and was specifically intended for families of GKJTU church staff, Sion Foundation employees, and GKJTU members facing financial hardship. The program’s foundation stems from a commitment to ensuring educational access for children whose parents cannot afford school fees.

The primary objective of this scholarship program is to provide sustainable educational support while shaping the children’s character so that they may eventually live independently and contribute to their surrounding communities. Currently, the program’s service areas cover various regions, including Salatiga, Getasan, Kopeng, Tugu, Kalikendel, Solo, Getas, Wonorejo, Kaliceret, Purwodadi, Blora, Bojonegoro, Pemalang, Semarang, and Kendal. Activities include distributing scholarships every three months, school planning, writing progress reports for sponsors, making Christmas cards, visiting and mentoring children in the service areas, as well as guidance through training, retreats, and other self-development activities.

For more than three decades, this program has had a tangible impact on the lives of many children and their families. Not only does it provide financial assistance to meet educational needs, but the program also focuses on fostering resilient, responsible individuals with social empathy. Many scholarship recipients have successfully completed their education and secured decent jobs, thereby improving their families’ economic and social conditions. With support from various partners—both international, such as Salatiga Zending (Netherlands), Partnership Lentera, and Klasis Moers (Germany), and domestic, such as SMPK 2 and SMAK 3 Penabur Jakarta, as well as individual sponsors—the Sion Foundation’s Adoption Unit Scholarship Program continues to serve as a bridge of hope for a better future.
